Description

Slider Charm 1: Buttonflower

The Buttonflower is a slider charm that stays in place whether worn as a ring, bracelet, choker, or headband. (It’s also charming when slid onto a pencil.)

Pattern includes instructions and a chart of standard jewelry sizes for creating a crocheted band, plus a simple ribbon one, for these projects: ring, bracelet, choker, and headband.

I designed it so that I could use the pretty little abalone buttons that I’ve had in my stash for years. Use any “bedspread weight” crochet thread (size #10) in any color to make your Buttonflower Charms, then slide one or more onto a dark-colored band of your choosing.

Skill level

Intermediate (some experience crocheting with size 10 thread is helpful). I have written the pattern with few abbreviations, and provide International English equivalents for American measurements, yarn weights, and stitch terms. The UK & Australian equivalents are in brackets {}.

After using this pattern you will know (if you didn’t already):

  • How to turn any crochet piece into a slider charm
  • How to work in the round
  • How incorporate a two-holed button as you crochet
  • How to crochet a matching set of metal-free jewelry

Finished Dimensions

Each Buttonflower Charm is approximately one and one-eighths of an inch {3.25 cm} at widest point. Charm is designed to snugly slide onto a ½ inch {1cm} wide velvet or crocheted band.

Materials

  • Steel Crochet Hook: size 1.75mm or size needed for working at a fairly tight gauge
  • Size #10 Crochet Thread (a.k.a. “bedspread weight”):
  • Small amounts of any color for flower(s)
  • Black (or dark color) for the crocheted band if not using velvet ribbon option
  • Button or Bead: ½”{1cm}-wide bead or flat 2-holed button per flower (pictured at right: 8mm pearl bead)
  • Stitch marker
  • Sewing needle and sewing thread to match ribbon or dark thread
  • Snaps (one pair, optional for crocheted bracelet and choker bands)
  • Optional:
    • Ribbon (not recommended for ring): half-inch/1cm-wide black velvet ribbon, approximately 9”/23cm long for a bracelet, 18”/46cm long for a choker, 24”/ 61cm for headband.
    • 4”/10cm of elastic that matches ribbon width and color for headband

Slider Charm 2: Big O-Ring

If you’ve ever admired DMC’s “Light Effects” collection of metallic jewel-tone embroidery flosses, now you have an excuse to buy one of every color (like I did!).

This slider charm is designed to have a “cocktail mod” look, especially when crocheted in metallic thread and slid onto a black band of your choosing. Black velvet ribbon can be used for a quick and polished bracelet, or slide one charm onto a crocheted band for an instant cocktail ring. Pattern includes instructions for creating a whole set.

Finished Dimensions

Each mod slider is approx. 7/8”(2.75cm) outer diameter.

Supplies

Ring: 1 hank embroidery floss (DMC metallic embroidery floss color #E334 used); 1.75mm steel crochet hook; small amount of size #10 cotton crochet thread in black, or half-inch(1cm) wide velvet ribbon for bracelet or choker.

Slider Charm 3: Oaty-O’s

In informal tests, casual onlookers repeatedly mistook these crocheted charms for real cereal. No charms have actually been ingested although they do contain 100% fiber content!

These charms are “sliders”. In jewelry lingo, a “slider charm” is a kind of bead or charm that can be slid onto something else, such as a ribbon or wristband. For this project they are slid onto black velvet ribbon.

Oat-colored size 10 cotton crochet thread and fruit-colored embroidery flosses were used here but any yarn or thread comparable to size #10 crochet thread would work.

These Sliders are meant to commemorate the Moms everywhere who spend years getting to know Cheeriostm, FrootLoopstm, and other “Oaty-O’s” type cereals. We parents (Dads too!) learn quickly to keep these cereals on hand and in one’s purse or car; we find them stuck to the back seats of cars, know the crunch of them underfoot in the kitchen, and have watched them become toys—strung like beads, stuck to little fingertips like puppets, and used as counters in counting books.
